Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?

During my medical education at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, I had the honor of meeting and training with the brilliant thought leaders in the field of gastroenterology. Gastroenterology has allowed me to combine clinical patient care with a hands-on approach by performing state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures. My strong clinical focus within the field of gastroenterology lies in performing endoscopic procedures for diagnosis and prevention of colon cancer, diagnosis of Barretts esophagus, and treatment of peptic ulcer disease, abdominal pain, and acid reflux.

Do you have any special honors, recognition, or achievements in your medical career that you would like to share?

One of my most memorable honors was being selected as the Chief Medical Resident at Mount Sinai Hospital. I spent a year teaching and mentoring young physicians and medical students and worked closely with the hospital administration. Subsequently, I served as the Chief of the gastroenterology clinic at Mount Sinai where I continued my focus on medical education and providing quality health care to the underserved. I then transitioned and expanded my role by teaching the Mount Sinai gastroenterology fellows the techniques of performing colonoscopy and endoscopy. I have cherished this honor for the past 25 years. Additionally, I proudly serve as an honorary police surgeon for the NYPD and NYS Police Troopers.

What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?

I cherish spending time with my wife, Jill, who is an anesthesiologist, and my two children, Melanie and Michael. We are amateur chefs and animal lovers. We enjoy growing organic vegetables and fruits on our farm and taking long hikes with our Black Russian Terrier, Bruno.
