Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?

Early on in my nutrition training, I became fascinated by the gut microbiome and its seemingly endless connections to all facets of health, and this fascination only grew during the latter part of my education. Nutrition adequacy and variety are inextricably linked with gastrointestinal health, and I find it extremely rewarding when I’m able to help a patient successfully manage GI distress and as a result, rediscover a good quality of life by finding the appropriate dietary pattern for them. I am passionate about empowering patients to believe that neither food, nor their bodies, are the enemy.

What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology?

I specialize in the intersection of gastrointestinal health, sports nutrition, and disordered eating, using a weight-inclusive approach to care. With the prevalence of diet culture and pseudoscientific nutrition recommendations permeating the internet, patients often find it challenging to figure out what they are “supposed to eat,” while also maintaining a good quality of life with minimal GI distress. I enjoy working with patients to break through the noise of a complex food environment, helping them to achieve a nourishing, satisfying, and stress-free dietary pattern. I have a particular interest in working with patients diagnosed with DGBIs, as well as athletes and active people, who seek help managing GI conditions and minimizing GI symptoms during training and performance. As all individuals have unique medical needs, lifestyle considerations, and food preferences, I enjoy collaborating with my patients to reduce anxiety surrounding food choices to help them find the most nutritional variety possible, based on their levels of tolerance.

Do you have any special honors, recognition or achievements in your medical career that you would like to share?

I’ve guest lectured at Pace University’s College of Health Professions, counseled pediatric caregivers at Columbia University’s Pediatric Dentistry Clinic, and have collaborated with researchers at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University on a study measuring the prevalence of disordered eating behavior in patients with Celiac Disease. I also contribute articles to various professional development group publications and plan to continue doing so in the future.

What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?

I have a background in theater, so I enjoy seeing shows with my family. We also enjoy staying active together - bowling, Pitch and Putt, hiking, and traveling. I’m also a huge animal lover, and often find myself scrolling through pictures of adoptable dogs on rescue websites - and preparing for the day that I finally adopt a dog!
