Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?
Training and spending so many years at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where gastroenterology is practiced at its best, surrounded by world experts in the field, greatly influenced my decision to be a gastroenterologist. I quickly realized that gastroenterology is an exciting and broad field that encompasses so many aspects of medicine; infectious diseases, oncology, rheumatology, pathology, surgery and preventive medicine. In addition, the ability to do endoscopic procedures allows me to participate hands-on in both diagnostic and therapeutic care of my patients. Having practiced gastroenterology over the past 10 years, I have no doubt that I made the right career choice. It is both exciting and rewarding to have an impact on people’s lives not only in acute settings such as gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain and diarrheal illnesses, but also in early diagnosis and prevention of gastrointestinal cancers. After many years of experience, I now participate in the training of new gastroenterologists at Mount Sinai Hospital. It is a privilege to be able to provide guidance and serve as a role model to future doctors in the field.
What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology?
I understand that visiting a gastroenterologist can be intimidating and create a sense of vulnerability. My goal is to treat all aspects of adult gastrointestinal problems in a personal, comprehensive, comfortable, and non-threatening atmosphere, while maintaining the highest standard of care. I enjoy interacting with patients by promoting an environment of understanding and engagement. I believe in creating a true partnership where patients understand and engage in the decision process towards their well-being and better health. While I enjoy all areas of gastroenterology, I am especially interested in issues related to women’s health, cancer prevention, diet, and obesity.
Do you have any special honors, recognition, or achievements in your medical career that you would like to share?
As a medical student, trainee, and faculty member at premier academic institutions such as Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, and Harvard School of Medicine, I received several research grants and awards. I published twelve peer-review scientific articles and book chapters and presented my work at national scientific meetings. My research focused on virology, metabolism, and obesity.
What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?
As a working mother, I maximize and appreciate my family time without a minute to spare! My family is an extension of me and during our time together we love to travel, visit museums and enjoy the outdoors with running, biking, playing tennis and skiing. Our shared passion is food! We love cooking as a family and exploring the exciting New York restaurant scene.
